Full-Body Red Light Therapy in Glasgow: What It Actually Does

If you bought an LED face mask and quietly stopped using it, you are not alone. Scroll any red light forum and the most-upvoted replies to before-and-after posts tend to be some version of “same, I don’t see any difference either”.

That is worth being straight about, because it explains most of the disappointment around red light therapy. The problem is usually not that the light does nothing. It is that a small panel held over part of your face for a few minutes is a very different proposition to lying in a bed lined with thousands of LEDs for a quarter of an hour.

This is a guide to the second kind, what the research has actually measured, and what it costs here in Glasgow.

What full-body red light therapy is

Red light therapy, or photobiomodulation to give it its proper name, is exposure to specific wavelengths of red and near-infrared light. It is UV-free. It will not tan you and it carries none of the UV risk that comes with sunbed use. If you want the longer explanation, we have written a plain-English guide to what red light therapy is.

“Full-body” is the part that matters and the part most people have never tried. Instead of a mask over your face or a panel pointed at one shoulder, you lie in a bed with LED arrays above and below you, covering you head to toe.

At Beautano that is the megaSun K11 Air Select, the first professional lay-down solarium built entirely on LED technology rather than traditional UV tubes. Its published specification lists 180 red light LEDs and more than 4,800 infrared LEDs, alongside Nano Beauty LEDs and its separate UVA and UVB arrays. For a red light session the bed runs a dedicated programme that uses the red and infrared LEDs only, with the UV lamps off.

That combination matters, because the research on photobiomodulation covers both red and near-infrared wavelengths rather than red alone. A typical at-home mask gives you a modest number of diodes over your face. This gives you thousands, over all of you.

The difference is coverage and consistency. You are not holding a device at a guessed distance for a guessed length of time. You lie down, the programme runs for fifteen minutes, and every part of you gets the same exposure.

What the research has actually found

Plenty of red light marketing overreaches. We would rather point you at the studies and let you judge, so here is what has genuinely been measured. These are real papers with PubMed IDs, so you can look up any of them yourself.

On skin, a 2023 randomised controlled trial found photobiomodulation reduced periocular wrinkle volume by 30% (PMID 36780572). An earlier controlled trial of red and near-infrared light reported improvements in skin complexion and collagen density compared with untreated controls (PMID 24286286).

On muscle recovery, a systematic review in the Journal of Athletic Training looked at whether phototherapy improves skeletal muscle function and post-exercise recovery, and found evidence that it does (PMID 23672326). A 2022 systematic review and meta-analysis compared photobiomodulation directly against cryotherapy (PMID 34669081).

Two things are worth saying about that body of evidence. The first is that researchers are still working out the optimal parameters, so anyone quoting you a precise protocol as settled fact is getting ahead of the science. The second is that studies use controlled wavelengths, distances and session lengths, which is exactly the part a consumer mask leaves to guesswork and a professional bed does not.

Red light therapy at Beautano is a cosmetic and wellbeing service. It is not a medical treatment, we do not offer it as one, and nothing above should be read as a promise about your own results.

Why a bed beats a mask

The obvious one is coverage. A mask covers your face. A full-body bed covers your face, neck, chest, back, arms and legs in the same fifteen minutes. If you were interested in red light for your skin generally, or for how your legs feel the day after training, a mask was never going to get there.

Then there is consistency, which matters more than people expect. The bed holds a fixed distance and runs a set programme. No holding a panel at arm’s length, no wondering whether ten minutes was enough or whether you were too far away.

The last one is the unglamorous one, and it is probably the real reason most masks end up in a drawer. A session you have booked and paid for gets done. A device sitting on your bedside table is competing with actually going to bed, and it usually loses.

Red light and sunbeds are not the same thing

This trips people up constantly, partly because our K11 does both. They are separate programmes doing separate jobs.

A sunbed uses UV to tan you. Red light therapy uses no UV at all and does not change your colour. You can use one, the other, or both, but they are not substitutes and the red light session is not “a gentle sunbed”. There is a fuller comparison in red light therapy vs sunbeds, and if you want to understand why an all-LED bed differs from an older UV-tube one, see standard sunbed vs megaSun K11.

What a session is like at Beautano

You get a private room. You undress to your comfort, put on the goggles we provide, and lie down. The programme runs for fifteen minutes. The light is a deep, even red, it is warm rather than hot, and there is nothing to do but lie there.

The K11 is set from a ten-inch touchscreen, so staff can put you on the right programme without any guesswork. It has proper air conditioning built in with AirBreeze cooling for your face and body, which is the difference between fifteen relaxing minutes and fifteen uncomfortable ones. There is a 3D sound system with Bluetooth if you want your own music, and the interior uses an infinity mirror design, so it does not feel like lying in a box.

This is our actual bed, filmed in the salon, rather than a stock photo of somebody else’s.

No appointment is needed. We are walk-in only, so you can come when it suits you.

Prices. A single full-body red light session is £18. A course of six is £90, which works out as paying for five and getting one free.

Where. Beautano is in Nitshill, on Glasgow’s south side. Full details are on our red light therapy page and current prices are always on the prices page.

Is it right for you?

Red light therapy suits you if you want something UV-free, you would like it applied to all of you rather than one patch, and you are happy to treat it as a routine rather than a one-off. Most people who see anything at all see it over a course of sessions, not after a single visit.

It is not right for you if you are expecting a medical outcome, or if you want to get brown. For that second one you want a sunbed, and the honest guidance on that is in is sunbed tanning safe.

If you are still unsure, come in and ask. We would rather talk you through it than sell you a course you are not sure about. New to salons in the city generally? We wrote how to choose a sunbed shop in Glasgow on what a good one should be doing.

Common questions

Does red light therapy tan you? No. It is UV-free, so it does not affect your skin colour at all.

How long is a session? Fifteen minutes on the full-body bed.

How often should I go? Most people come two or three times a week to begin with. There is no benefit to going daily.

Can I do red light and a sunbed on the same visit? Yes, they are separate programmes and plenty of people do both.

Do I need to book? No. Beautano is walk-in only.

Is it safe? Red light therapy is UV-free and non-invasive. It is a cosmetic and wellbeing service rather than a medical treatment. If you have a health condition or take medication that affects light sensitivity, check with your GP first.
